This drill is a great measure of how hard the recoil of a handgun is to control. Called the Forty-Five Drill, it requires you to draw from the holster and fire five shots into a 5-inch circle at 5 yards in less than 5 seconds. The third drill was my standard evaluation drill when evaluating defensive handguns. After drawing the gun, we hammered two quick shots to the torso and then-as fast as possible-made a precision shot on a swinging head-plate. We modified the drill to help us better evaluate our interface with each handgun while under pressure, and strived for a par time of 2 seconds. Normally, this drill requires double-tapping a torso target at five yards twice, evaluating the effects, and then firing a head shot if needed. The second drill was a version of the Failure Drill. We also needed help with ammunition, targets, and holsters, and without Federal, Buffalo Bore, Thompson Targets, and Galco, our test of the best handguns would not have been possible.įederal provided 9mm HST ammo and it was used to test every 9mm handgun. This gave us a balanced opinion of experienced shooters, aged from 22 to 57 years. So, to help with the test, I invited Field & Stream senior editor, Matthew Every trained law enforcement SWAT officer Will McGuire and graduate of Gunsite Academy’s 250 pistol course Sebastian Mann. I use the word “we,” because one shooter cannot provide a practical evaluation of how a group of handguns might appeal or interface with different people. We’d like to help prevent that, and it’s why we conducted a test at my home and private range in West Virginia to evaluate as many of the new-for-2022 handguns as we could find. It may not be better in every way, but it’s better in some and at least as good in others. TTAG Verdict: This pistol gives the GLOCKs, Springfields, and M&Ps of the world a run for their money. This is a good choice for new shooters, too. TTAG Verdict: Great reliability for the price, and there’s something to be said for a good looking, cheap compact gun. The only sticking point is the DA/SA trigger, which could stand some improvement, and the double action might be a little hard for newbies. SIG SAUER quality with a sticker price below GLOCK’s “perfection.” And it’s hammer-fired unlike the rest of this bunch. TTAG Verdict: Full stop, o ne of the best affordable handguns on the market for the money. TTAG Verdict: It’s not perfect, but it’s reliable and, considering the price, it’s a surprisingly solid, sensible choice. It’s hard to do much better in this category.

The M2.0 is a significant upgrade to the earlier M&P, particularly in the trigger. TTAG Verdict: A great value on a quality S&W pistol. If not, the XD Mod.2 Service Model’s a total no-gripe zone, and a no-BS duty weapon for concealed carry. If you’re a trigger snob, deduct one star and head over to FN and Walther. TTAG Verdict: OK, so it’s slightly over the price line, but it’s a better gun than the G19. Price: Around $500, maybe $520 via Brownells or Cabela’s Perfect for the budget-conscious new shooter looking for a more-than-merely-adequate home defense pistol. TTAG Verdict: Good ergonomics, an OK trigger, OK sights, OK reliability and OK accuracy.

At that price, you really can’t afford not to buy one…or four. It has one glaring flaw in the trigger, but that’s easily remedied for $20. TTAG Verdict: A dead nuts reliable inexpensive gun that’s a pleasure to shoot for a touch over three bones. Price: $330, sometimes on sale for $250 via Brownells Our reviewer was thoroughly impressed and would’ve expected something like this at a price point closer to $500-$600. As a standalone product, this is an awesome gun. But SIG’s new super-popular, extremely packable concealed carry gun packs an exceptional number of rounds in an eminently concealable package. TTAG Verdict: This one just sneaks in under the wire in both cost and capacity.

TTAG Verdict: A solid, dependable pistol that’s an ultra-affordable choice for carry, home defense or as a truck gun. Price: $250-$300 via Cabela’s or Brownells
